Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by a Canadian Armored regiment and a strong force of Royal Navy and smaller Royal Air Force landing contingents. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat. The raid took place on the northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. The Dieppe Raid, also known as the Battle of Dieppe, Operation Rutter and, later, Operation Jubilee, was a Second World War Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The film ends with shots of the Atlantic Wall defenses and shows German aircraft and ships on guard on the English Channel. At 2:55 landing boats are inspected while prisoners, among them the wounded, are removed from the beach. At 2:39 a Canadian soldier is shown on the beach. The rest of the film is aftermath footage showing dead bodies, wrecked equipment including 28 tanks and landing craft. At 1:50 German troops fight back and at 1:58 take casualties. At 1:10 an anti-aircraft barrage goes up against Allied aircraft. The film begins with a graphic that shows the landing force before showing German shore defenses firing against Royal Navy ships.
